[Which Ellie needs and deserves. She's been through so much shit that she needs to just have the good in the world now. It's all that she wants for her. Ellie seriously deserves it...seriously.]

[Ellie's fingers grip Riley's tightly, then relax.]

[She nods a little.]

[It makes her laugh again, thinking of all they've done to keep each other safe. Down to some downright stupid, boneheaded shit -- like shooting at the leader of the Fireflies, and running into the basement of a burning school.

She thinks of taking off on Callus, of luring the group in the Rockies away from Joel.]

Guess I'm the same way.

That makes me pretty happy, you know. That you feel that way. About me.

[Seriously. It actually means the world to her. That Ellie would do those things for her...because...]

But it kinda makes us really stupid.

[Laughing aches a lot, but she pushes it out anyway. She has to. Sometimes it's the only way to release that awful pressure.

Riley's chest is warm, and she wants to stay here forever, but she can practically feel the ache under the words. Only now that they are older does she really understand how Riley feels. She lifts her head, shifts up.

They're so rarely serious.]

I'm really... really happy you're here.

[She whispers it. Then, carefully, because she's so unsure of the small gestures, she reaches out to tuck a piece of hair back from Riley's face. It's a small thing she learned from her.]

[She looks up at her, not really sure what else to say. Selfishness is what she knows best from the world. It's what she knows how to respond to.

So she reacts the only way she can figure out.

With a joke.]

That's kind of cheesy.

[Ellie leans in, pressing her lips between Riley's eyebrows and staying there for a few seconds, fingers in her hair.]

[Dark as her skin is, she still goes quite red at the words.]

...It sounded pretty good though.

[Smiling against her skin, she scratches gently, then grins.]

Made ya blush.

[She puts a hand over her face.]

Oh shut up.

[Ellie moves her hand up, but just enough to kiss her.]

[It's embarrassing but she allows it, kissing her back even. She probably looks dumb with a hand on her face while she does this but oh well.]

I meant it. Cheesy or not.

You never should've... things should have been different.

Things were the way they were supposed to be. Wondering how we could change them doesn't fix the problem. Now we just have to live with what we have, make the most of it.

Y'know, you piss me off sometimes, with how you're able to make everything make sense just by talking about it.

[She glances off to the side all bashful now.]

Yeah, but when you talk, it makes people wanna follow you everywhere.

[She really doesn't. Despite her being a leader type, she doesn't really view herself like that. Who would want to follow her? Nah, she's just a kid who happens to be able to take care of herself and that's it.]

[Ellie bites her lip, sitting up a little. She still looks a bit out of it, a little distant.]

[She pokes at Ellie's face.]

It's pretty cool that you'd follow me though.

[Ellie shifts at the poke, then sighs, the lingering tension ebbing until she can almost smile.]
