Canon; The Last of Us (http://thelastofus.wikia.com/wiki/The_Last_of_Us_Wiki)
Canon Point; Post death
Age; 16
House; House of Loki
Power; Telekinesis
Personality; Riley is a survivor. She has been through hell all her life and has learned how to survive through all of it. So while death isn't something she fears, she does fight to live. This began from an early point in her life where she watched her father get infected and rip her mother to pieces. She then killed her father herself before he could kill her as well. Kill to live, steal to live, do whatever it takes to just keep living because this is the kind of world that she's ended up inside of. This is the kind of thing that would actually turn someone paranoid or even hyper serious. She'd have every reason to be after all she's seen.
Instead, she is a confident teen who tends to wear a smile. She jokes around, loves puns and pranks, and loves to be a leader. In fact, she's a good one. When she was at the military school, she had a gang of sorts who seemed to look up to her. Then again, it's hard not to when one sees that she holds herself as if she owns the very ground she's standing on. It's like the world is her playground and she's there to take advantage of that. Not only that but she's not afraid to talk back or state her opinion on matters, much of which can be seen in how she speaks to adults and Ellie.
Along with this, she can take care of herself. She's able to sneak into places unnoticed or even find her way out of trouble even if it looks like she might die. Now, obviously, this isn't the most successful all the time if she happens to be going back to rescue someone she cares about but it does show that she can get out of scrapes. After all, the only time she's ever failed to escape a terrible fate is when she went back to rescue Ellie after Ellie fell off the scaffolding.
This is not to say she won't put herself in danger though. This is a girl who hunted down the dangerous rebels known as the Fireflies just to join them, the girl who slipped out of the quarantine zone just to go find them. She's aware of the fact that she could die but she refuses to just stay safe. Remaining safe behind a wall or hidden inside some kind cage is not her idea of a good time. Far from it. In fact, she's very against someone lying to her about what the dangers are that she might face. She wants all the information so when she goes out into the world, she knows what she's getting into. This much is made clear when an announcement provides one bit of information and she scoffs to say that the opposite is true.
This does not mean she's the most honest though. For the most part, she will offer the truth without a care about what another person's feelings might be. However, when it comes to her own, then she's likely to change the subject or joke around. She doesn't open up easily and even the person she's closest to has trouble getting her to admit to things. This is something that Ellie brings up more than once during Left Behind as she tries to understand why Riley would hurt her a couple months prior then suddenly try to make up for it. The fact is that while Riley puts on a tough act with a smile and a sense of humor, she's really very sensitive to things.
She doesn't want to be looked down on and is eager to prove herself. She has passed the tests that Marlene gave her just to join the Fireflies, even going so far as to kill. With that said, she's not the most eager to talk about the terrible things that she's done. It's why she avoids telling Ellie why she left and even uses actions as an apology rather than words. She needs people to recognize her even though she can be a bit of a lone wolf who goes off to do her own thing without a care about who it might hurt or who she might abandon in the process.
With all this said, she's still a girl who is playful and who enjoys tricks and jokes. Even after being away from from Ellie with no explanation for two months, she still slipped into her room to pretend to be an infected to bite Ellie's neck. Not only this but she puts on a mask to scare her friend and even almost gets shot getting water guns so they can have a water battle. It's not lie to earlier mention that she views the world as her playground, it's very clear that this is the case. There's so much she doesn't understand and she's curious about it. With her very vivid imagination, she can turn just about anything into a game.
While these are things she could do on her own, she does appear to thrive with others. She likes to drag others into trouble with her to do the things that others wouldn't normally allow. Drinking alcohol, sneaking into danger zones, etc. Now, sometimes she might do this as a way to distract people so she can slip in somewhere (a great example is when she let Winston take Ellie on the horse so she could look for his walkie talkie) but she also can do this because it really is the fun thing for her to do. That or she knows that she isn't great at talking about her feelings so she can use it as a way to apologize or make up for a wrong doing.
Riley is known for being a troublemaker. She has strikes when she's at the school, she sneaks out, Winston states that she is, she drinks hard liquor, she joins the Fireflies. These are not the actions of someone who is an upstanding individual. In fact, if she views the system to be wrong then she will rebel against it. She doesn't trust anyone easily so she won't open up to them. Instead, she'll just fend for herself, fight for herself. It's what she's done all her life so why stop now? So, she'll throw people off with a tough girl act and a smile with some jokes then run off without telling anyone at all what she's up to.
As is probably very obvious here, there is one person who can really get Riley to open up more than anyone else, one person who is more important to her than anyone else. That person is Ellie. They were very close before Riley joined the Fireflies, having something good with her according to Ellie's own words. The kiss they share shows just how close they were and she gives up her dream of being one of the Fireflies to run away and be with her. She has no plan for what they will do but she says they'll figure it out. Though she never says the words, it's really pretty clear that she loves Ellie quite deeply.
Ellie makes her happy and Ellie makes her stronger. However, she's also perhaps her greatest weakness and her adoration of her is what finally gets her killed since she goes back to rescue her when she sees her fall. Yet, she doesn't let that get her down. She decides that she wants to spend every last second she has with her, wanting to treasure those moments. As she says, it's poetic that they go mad together. Of course, she's the one who ends up dying while Ellie is the one who goes on living.
But this isn't all that Riley is willing to do for her. Before leaving to join the Fireflies, she has a huge fight with Ellie. It's never made clear what was said but it is obvious that some very hurtful things were said. They were said in anger and it becomes very clear that Riley regrets what she said to her. More than that, she adores Ellie so much that when she finds out she won't be stationed in that city and will be moved away she doesn't want to leave. She wants to have an excuse to not leave, anything at all. The last thing she wants is to be away from her or to find that she no longer has a way to return to her. For that reason, she goes out of her way to make things up to her. The fight would mean that Ellie wouldn't ask for her back so she wants to show her she still cares.
Riley takes her to where they first went together, the mall. There she enjoys some exploration with her then shows her that the electricity to the mall is still on so they can do things together like riding the carousel, taking pictures in the photobooth, seeing the arcade. She even went across the city, nearly getting shot, to recover two water guns that she knows Ellie has been longing for. At the end, they even dance together to music that Riley puts on. She doesn't want to leave her and the moment Ellie gives her a reason by saying she doesn't want her to go she rips off her pendant to say they can run away together.
It may not be easy for her to say these things, to really admit that she wants Ellie to want her or that she loves her, but she knows how to display her true feelings. As stated previously, in the end it's her devotion and love for her that gets her killed because she rushes to save her and ends up getting bitten by one of the infected. But she never regrets any of her decisions, deciding to make the most out of everything. This is perhaps one of her greatest attributes, being able to make the most out of everything from a video game that doesn't work to how she'll spend the last moments of her life. She realizes that even with all that is going on in her life, she needs to focus on what is still good no matter how hard it might be. This doesn't mean she isn't realistic, she knows that things like the infection aren't going to get better. Riley just realizes that sometimes the best thing to do is treasure what is still good in life.
Anyone who befriends her will find her willing to stand up for them. She'll defend the weak because she knows she's stronger and she'll take them under her wing if they'll let her. Riley doesn't think herself better than others and it's one of the reasons why she can be so likeable. She's a great friend to have because she knows how to put a smile on another person's face. She wears a smile because others might not be able to find one. Crying is something she tries never to do and, as far as canon is concerned, only Ellie has seen her shed tears. Part of what she views as being strong is not breaking down and always keeping cool. Even when she's under attack, she calmly focuses on finding a way to safety, instinct moving her along and helping her recognize the way out.
Riley is a great big sister or a friend. On the flip side, she can be a holy terror to those that she feels are just trying to control her rather than respecting her and/or telling her the truth. Yet, once someone gets close enough to her, she wants to joke around and have a laugh so she can treasure the memories she has because she's used to a life that's nothing but a hell. All she wants is to have that last bit of light to let her know that the world hasn't completely swallowed her up yet and she is there to remind Ellie of that same fact. There are still things to be curious about, to explore and get to know. Though she knows that death can strike at any time, she wants to live her life to the fullest until the very end, hopefully with the most important person in the entire world to her...Ellie.

You know what, let's talk about something else. Liiiiike how I'm a superhero now. Powers. That's definitely a new one for me but I could get used to it. Oh man this is so fucking awesome!
So, superhero names. Shoot. I want to hear them because damn if Angel Knives isn't taken already.

*This is introspective from Riley's time getting to Ellie's room.
She was a survivor. She had been doing all she could to stay alive for as long as she could remember. Some people didn't really believe that of her given how she acted around others but she didn't want them prying into her past. Talking about things like how she'd had to watch her mother be ripped to pieces and how she'd killed her own father just wasn't her style. It was just better if they didn't discuss some things. Ever. It was also better to push people away from her.
The problem was that she'd tried to do that with Ellie. They'd had something really good going when she'd just gone and fucked it all up. At first it hadn't seemed that big a deal. Just go join the Fireflies then convince Marlene to let Ellie come too. They could be Fireflies together. Badass chicks who could be sexy and fight together. It wasn't that bad an idea really but Marlene had other plans. Ellie was safer at the stupid school where she could learn stupid lessons about how to kill Fireflies. That part wouldn't have been so bad because they could have had some cheesy story about being on opposite sides and destined to probably kill each other.
Actually, that sounded pretty stupid in her head too.
The point was that none of it would have been that bad if it weren't for the fact that she was supposed to be shipped off somewhere else. That would have meant leaving Ellie behind here, maybe never seeing her again. For a day or so, she'd struggled with how to handle the situation and had finally settled for needing to see her again. If she told her to go then she'd go but if she told her to stay then...well, she'd see what happened when that happened.
The problem was that she knew her girl. She'd get told to take a leap off a fucking building if she didn't find a way to make things up to her first. At least she had a couple ideas already. The pun book she'd found for starters, the fact that the power was on at the mall for another. Taking a deep breath, she hid in the shadows as the military went running past without spotting her. That had been way too close. Someone had almost put a bullet through her this time but at least she'd managed to get those water guns back. Now she had them tucked safely in her backpack, ready to slip into the dorms. There was no way that Ellie would have been moved to another room so she just had to get in there.
Grinning at how she'd defeated the military suckers, she ran into the dorms and looked around. Of course there wouldn't be any military in here, they were all too busy in the administration building. They'd be running around there for hours before they figured out no one was there. It was hilarious.
It also made slipping through this building to get to Ellie's room easy. Sighing, she walked up to the door where she stopped.
Damn. She'd really fucked up things with her girl the last time. All those things she'd said to her... Riley wouldn't be able to blame her if she never wanted to see her again. She'd hate her too. The fact that she hadn't meant anything she'd said then wasn't too important so she was in for some major ass kissing to make things up to her.
Would she forgive her though? Would she even want her back?
Riley rested her head against the door and groaned. Ugh, this just sucked. Here she was, a totally awesome girl who was great at survival actually scared to enter the room of the best girl she'd ever known. Honestly, killing her father to live hadn't been as stupidly scary as this was right now. It was ridiculous. She could just kick herself.
You've killed and stolen and nearly been shot and bitten and now you're afraid to talk to a girl. That's not pathetic at all. Bitch, come on. It's...her.
Taking a deep breath, she remembered how she'd met her. Rescuing her from those guys trying to beat her to a pulp. Oh sure she'd stolen her walkman but at least it had ended with her getting to see her again. Well, that and her catching Riley at her own game and following her to the mall for the first time. Man, those had been great days. The two of them getting into trouble together and taking pictures together. She'd really fallen for that girl hard and it had hurt more to leave her than anything else.
Well, she wasn't getting any younger. She could go in there and actually say she was sorry.
Yeah, no way in hell. Totally not her style. Instead, Riley slipped into the room quietly, closing the door behind her. There were no soldiers on this floor so she didn't have to worry about being caught but she still wanted to surprise her. Or scare her. She didn't even know anymore but her first thought was how nice she looked sleeping there.
Followed by how unfair it was that she still didn't have a roommate.
Sneaking in, she made sure to tip toe. It was really tempting to let her keep sleeping like that but she was never going to see how Ellie really felt about her if she did. If she had to leave then she had to see if she could ever have feelings for her ever again first. It was really stupid and something a kid would do but Riley found it actually hurt more to think that she'd have to make the most of her days without Ellie around. Here she was a lone wolf and now she wanted this girl, her girl, to be in her pack.
With that, she jumped on her and bit her neck with a growl, laughing as she was thrown to the floor when Ellie reacted. The knife didn't bother her at all.
Wow. She looked good.
God, she hoped she'd take her back. The Fireflies had once been her dream but now, no matter how dumb it sounded, Ellie was her world. She just wanted to have her back.
